    Hi colleagues,

I have to admit that we are currently still using VMWare templates to built our servers. It takes a while until a server is running and operational. – Patching, Antivirus, Some custom programs and settings, etc.

We have SCCM and also using GPOs.

I started thinking of Puppet and read about DSC. Both seems appropriate and an improvement for the current situation. Not sure if Puppet is better because it makes a much matured impression ( incl. Foreman ) or DSC because the LCM is already available from scratch.

What I don’t know is how to ‘fully patch’ new servers neither with Puppet nor with DSC.

But maybe there are other, better solutions?

How do you built your windows servers?

    Thanks in advance

    1. Convert the template to a VM
    2. Assign to the VM a temporary IP
    3. Install updates
    4. Convert the VM to a template

This can be automated with PowerCLI:

    Set-Template -Template $template -ToVM

    Set-VM -ToTemplate -Name VMTemplate
