If you start the Windows 8.1 setup from a DVD or the ISO file on a VirtualBox virtual machine, you might get this error message:

This PC can’t run Windows 8.1 Preview

You can’t install Windows 8.1 Preview because your processor doesn’t support CompareExchange128.

      This PC can't run Windows 8.1 - CompareExchange128

The reason for this error message is the same that I covered in a previous post. Windows 8.1 64-bit and Windows Server 2012 R2 require a specific CPU instruction that is disabled by default on VirtualBox machines.

To enable this CPU instruction, run this command at the command prompt of the host computer:

      "c:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxManage.exe" setextradata [vmname] VBoxInternal/CPUM/CMPXCHG16B 1

You have to replace “vmname” with the name of the virtual machine. Put the name in quotes if it contains blanks.

Note that this command is not required for Windows 8.1 32-bit.
