A few sites report that a Registry hack enables Windows XP get security updates. The hack makes Windows Update think that the OS is Windows Embedded POSReady 2009. Microsoft will offer security updates for these systems until April 2019.

This is the Windows XP Registry hack:

      Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\WPA\PosReady]
      “Installed”=dword:00000001

If you put this in a .reg file and double click it, Windows XP is supposed to pull security updates from Windows Update.

I no longer have a Windows XP machine. Can anyone confirm that this is really working?

If it does, I wonder how long it will take until Microsoft will find a way to stop this hack from working. On the other hand, if they tacitly consent to this “workaround” they would help to those organizations that are unable to upgrade their systems anytime soon thereby significantly improving the overall security on the Internet.

Just read that Microsoft warns users about the hack:

Windows XP customers also run a significant risk of functionality issues with their machines if they install these updates, as they are not tested against Windows XP.
