Using keyboard shortcuts allow you to work more efficiently. Windows has quite a few hotkeys, and it obviously doesn’t make sense to memorize them all. But I recommend skimming over the all available shortcut keys and choosing the ones that seem to be useful for you. I just copied the list from Windows 7 help.

The advantage of the list here is that you can perform a full text search over all keyboard shortcuts without having to expand all sections first. The first section contains all new shortcuts in Windows 7. I have stolen this list from Technet. The article there is about the beta version, but I suppose not much has changed since then.

Please let me know if you spotted another new Windows 7 hotkey. Just in case you didn’t upgrade yet, you can check out the complete list of Windows Vista hotkeys. If you want to create your own hotkeys, you should try the free keyboard shortcut tool AutoHotkey.

Have you got this in a downloadable format? Handy… :-)

  2. You can just copy and paste it to Word. This will preserve the formatting.

  3. Phil says:

Great compilation! I’ve tried some of the initial ones like minimize/maximize on Server 2008 R2, but it doesn’t seem to work. Does anyone know if there is some hack for enabling these shortcuts on R2? (yes, I have the desktop experience feature enabled).

    Thanks in advance!
    Phil.

  4. Daniel says:

The magnifier is definitely more comfortable to use with the keyboard shortcuts. Note that you can also use the AltGr key instead of the Ctrl+Alt combinations, which for instance makes colour inversion much more comfortable.

  5. Lee says:

Love It Thanks For Your Time And Effort Of Putting This Together

  6. Jimba says:

Grt, I hope it will save my time without dragging the mouse!

  7. V@no says:

“Windows logo key +Click a taskbar item Open a new instance of that particular application”

This is incorrect hot key. The correct is:
Shift + Click a taskbar item

  8. V@no, thanks! I corrected it.

  9. Muy Samda says:

Whao How great it is It very good for
Thanks for your Develop this :)

  10. Deb Johnson says:

Does anyone know the keyboard shortcut for moving the taskbar in Windows 7? I work in an elementary school and somehow the students keep moving the taskbar to the top of the monitor. We have restricted the rights they have on the computer so they can’t just click on it and move it up there. Thanks for the info above on other shortcuts.

  11. Dan says:

You can select the taskbar and then hit alt space, choose move and move the mouse with the arrows all the way to the right or left or top. This will move the taskbar. To stop this behavior you will need to lock the taskbar.

  12. Asih Purwita S. says:

    Thank you! It’s great!

  13. Brian says:

Is there a hotkey for “Restart now”?
    Sometimes my mouse jams solid…

  14. Rix says:

@Brian You can Windows + D to go to desktop or Alt+F4 your way to desktop. Then Alt+F4 when on desktop to open “close computer” window. Between Tab and arrows, you can work your way to close/restart whatever you want.

Anybody know an hotkey to make the opposite of the open all folder hotkey when in the explorer of Windows ?

“Num Lock+Asterisk (*) on numeric keypad
Display all subfolders under the selected folder”

I want to uncollapse all the sub-folder below and their own subfolders. Using Num Lock+Minus (*) only collapse the one you are “focusing”. If you reopen it with
Num Lock+Plus (+) all folder below will still be opened which is sometime unwanted.

    Thanks!
