Today, I started preparations on my own desktop for Windows Vista. I know, I am late. Windows Vista RTM has been available on MSDN for a couple of days already. And I know that many admins have moved to Vista RC2 sometime ago. My post about the Adminpak for Windows Vista is the most often accessed article on this blog for some time now. Obviously, many sysops could not wait until the final version of Vista is out.

I found too many bugs in Vista's release candidates. So, I decided to wait for the final version. Today, I installed it without any problem on a brand new Fujitsu-Siemens PC.

I never upgrade my old system. I didn't even do that when I moved from Windows 2000 to XP. In my view, it is better to start with a new installation, every now and then, to get rid of all the garbage that piled up over the years.

It only took me 15 minutes to install Vista on my new PC! This new imaging technology does not only make life easier for system administrator, it also accelerates the installation of Vista tremendously.

What really surprised me is that the Vista setup didn't ask for a license key. During the last months, there were so many discussions about the changes in Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) and Vista activation. Now I wonder why Microsoft troubles buyers of the consumer version, if there is a Vista image for enterprise customers available, where you don't even have to enter a license key. How long will it take for this version to be available on the net? Somehow I think, I am missing something here.

I am curious if the bugs I found in RC2 are fixed now. Also, how many of my apps don't work with Vista. By the way, the best reviews about Vista, I've read so far, are from Paul Thurrott.
