WinBubble is a free portable tweaking tool for Windows 7. One of the downsides of a flexible operating system like Windows 7 is that its different settings are sometimes difficult to discover and often cumbersome to access. The Windows Control Panel is where you can find most Windows settings but sometimes it takes five clicks or more to reach a deeply hidden setting. This is not a big problem if you only have to change a configuration every now and then. However, if you often have to repair PCs that have been "configured" by end users, you will find a tweaking tool useful that allows you to access the most common settings quickly.

WinBubble also enables you to tweak Windows Vista. But if the Windows 7 market share continues to grow so rapidly it will soon be the only Windows version around. This is why I only tweaked Windows 7 in my tests.

WinBubble can also be installed, but if you want to run it from your USB stick you can just copy the WinBubble2 folder that is included in the ZIP file. Although I didn't test all of the countless settings, everything I did try worked flawlessly. Sometimes WinBubble will tell you to log off or reboot after you changed a setting, but often this is unnecessary.

The free tweaking tool has ten tabs: General, Specific, Icons, Windows 7, Security, Optimize, Tools, More Policies, IE, and Tips and Tricks. I made a screenshot of each tab because in this case a picture tells you more than a lengthy description.

I should add that WinBubble not only allows you to tweak Windows 7, but you can also use it to launch Windows tools. In addition, you can add your own tools to the WinBubble user interface, which makes this free tweaking tool a useful companion for sneakernet admins. Of course, you can also RDP to a user's desktop and launch the tweaking tool from a network share.

As long as this only exposes settings that are accessible via the UI somewhere, I'm ok with it. But, tweaking apps seem to wreck win7 much easier than its older counterparts.

Yes, I would be careful with all kinds of "performance optimizations".

  3. Nice find! I think this earns the title of "most tweaking options" of all the Windows tweaking tools out there. It's definitely one of the most IT-friendly.
