Microsoft’s Windows Server Division weblog announced that Windows Server 2008 RTM (release to manufacturing) is now scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2008. Originally, Microsoft planned the product launch for February 2008. Since it usually takes some months until a Microsoft product becomes finally available thru distribution channels this amounts to a delay of several months. It is a bit disappointing for me because we expected the RTM in Q4 2008.

After playing with Windows Server 2008 for several months, I started to like Microsoft’s new server OS. Of course, I prefer a stable delayed OS rather than an unstable early release. And, of course, it is difficult to schedule such a large software project. But I think Microsoft should have enough experience in this. So is this just because Microsoft’s developers constantly overestimate their capabilities or is this part of their marketing strategy? I somehow refuse to believe the latter, because constantly disappointing customers is not really smart marketing.
