From my experience, cloud can sucessfully take over most common apps but not critical business applications, multimedia apps, DB's etc. The same topic was discussed when Hypervisors came in, without a support engineer no corporate can ever do magic to manage their services and also company with logic will try to migrate less critical apps to cloud and allow their engineers to spend more on the criticals, this will allow them less worry about day-to-day nuissances like word and excel problems.

Yes, it can be. It depends on the service provider. But it is in their interest to treat all their customers equally.

Sorry to say this but I believe IT Outsourcing can also be innovative. Just my opinion.

Aaron, I absolutely agree. Past experience in my organization has shown that outsourcing didn’t help to reduce the number of IT pros. Even though quite a few of our services are running on external servers now, I just got two more admins for my department.

I agree with Greg and Michael. There might be a slight loss of jobs because of clouding but overall I think admins will just have different reponsibilities instead. It seems like just when you solve one problem or save money in one area you usually just end up moving on to the next hotspot.

Trollicus, perhaps we should move to India, then. They not only have the IT jobs, they also have better food. I really don’t like burgers. ;-)

Tech jobs are going offshore, who cares what someone else will be doing in the future. I'll be in the U.S.A. flipping burgers with the rest of you.

Greg, you are certainly right. I also think that some will still get paid for rebooting servers even though these servers are located somewhere in the cloud. Take this server where my blog is running. It is a server in the cloud and I still have to reboot it myself if necessary.

Not "dead," just different. Techs may not get paid to reboot cmputers, but someone needs to know what tolls are out there and hoe they can be used in business.
