FlexTK_Express FlexTK Express from Flexsense is a good example of a GUI tool that allows you to perform tasks that can be done only on the command prompt by operating system means. Its file management capabilities are so sophisticated that only an absolute PowerShell geek would be able to reproduce them with scripts. However, to work with FlexTK Express you don’t have to write one line of code and you can get the job done without consulting a manual. You just have to launch the tool to automate all kinds of file management operations. This is how system administration should always be.

FlexTk Express has three main functions: Search, Orgranize and Sync.

AccessEnum AcessEnum from Microsoft’s Sysinternals tool collection enables you to list user accesses to a tree of directories or registry keys. With Windows Explorer or a registry editor you can only view access rights for a particular object, a certain folder, for example. If a directory has many subfolders it is difficult to figure out if access rights have been configured properly.

AccessEnum only lists the users and groups who have read or write access and where the deny attribute has been set. In most cases that should be enough though. What I like most about the tool is that it allows you to compare the current configuration with saved settings. This way you can easily find out if someone manipulated access permissions on a certain directory structure. If you right click on a column you can access the folder’s properties and you can also exclude a folder with its subfolders from the list.

the best file name indexing utility

Publisher’s description:

Locate32 is software which can be used to find files from your harddrives and other locations. It works like updatedb and locate commands in Unix based systems. In other words, it uses databases to store information about directory structures and uses these databases in searches. The use of these databases provides very fast searching speed. The software includes a dialog based application as well as console programs which can be used to both update and access databases. Supported operation systems are Windows 98/ME/NT4/2000/XP/Vista.

the best disk space viewer

Publisher’s descirption:

SpaceMonger is a tool for keeping track of the free space on your computer. Each file or folder on a given drive is displayed in a box in the main window whose size is a relative comparison to all the other files in your system. So, for example, if the “Windows” box takes up 90% of the screen, the “C:\Windows” folder and all its sub-folders and files are taking up 90% of your “C:” drive.

Another Tool I like to share: “Necromancers Dos Navigator”. Despite the bold name, it’s one of the better if not the best free “file commander” out there. This tool is available for linux and w32 plattform and beats mc and other free commander tools with a lot of nice features like an inbuild hex editor, support for a lot of different archives types, a nice editor and a really versatile file viewer.

DeltaCopy is an open source, fast incremental backup program. Let’s say you have to backup one file that is 500 MB every night. A normal file copy would copy the entire file even if a few bytes have changed. DeltaCopy, on the other hand, would only copy the part of file that has actually been modified. This reduces the data transfer to just a small fraction of 500 MB saving time and network bandwidth.

A great tool to see disk usage and look for large files or duplicate folders quickly and easily. It couples a standard directory list with a treemap, and works on drives, folders, or UNC paths.

Michael’s note: I reviewed WindDirStat.

Lets you know where all your free space is going. No need to install; runs from a .exe.

Publisher’s description:

Every hard disk is too small if you just wait long enough. TreeSize Free tells you where precious space has gone to. TreeSize Free can be started from the context menu of a folder or drive and shows you the size of this folder, including its subfolders. You can expand this folder in Explorer-like style and you will see the size of every subfolder. Scanning is done in a thread, so you can already see results while TreeSize Free is working. The space, which is wasted by the file system, can be displayed and the results can be printed in a report. TreeSize Free is freeware for Windows 9x/2000/XP/Vista.

Robocopy is like rsync for Windows. It’s abilities include moving mass amounts of data from disks and shares, keeping two directories mirrored, and maintaining ACLs through the whole process.

Sometime ago, I reviewed WinDirStat, a free tool that helps you find files and folders occupying large space on your disk. JDiskReport can be used for the same purpose. However, it works in a different way.
