I am using Vista Ultimate for about 3 years now which was installed ( to be honest) from a cd which was NOT genuine. It worked quite satisfatorily. Within course of time I downloaded and installed SP1 and then SP2 from autoupdate. Soon I got a pop from MS that I should verify that its genuine. Naturally my attempts failed. I had to reinstall Vista from same CD as upgrade.
Everything was back to normal and showing it "Windows activated as Genuine Windows".
Then the auto update downloaded SP1 again. This time I cancelled the installation to avoid verification of genuine windows. I am planning to disable auto update. Hope it works.

Recently added an HP dvd1260i device to my desktop with evga 730i motherboard. Applying the Windows Vista x64 SP1 update left the computer in a non-booting state until I removed the DVD drive.

Regarding Vista Laptop going into the black screen upon resume from sleep or suspend or hibernate, I describe a solution on this website:

http://annoyances-resolved.blogspot.com/2009/08/laptop-wont-resume-from-sleep.html

In my case the Vista hibernate file was unaccessible.

Vista SP 1 hiding Processor and Memory. Recently I found that on the control panel system shows that Processor and Memory are not available. I have been trying to solve this problem but failed. After I uninstalled the problem has been solve but the machine getting slower and blue screen crash happen many times. Then I reinstalled the SP 1 the maching is getting faster and the problems of Processor and Memory remain as usual (not available).

I have a Dell e1705 and have attempted to do the SP1 update two separate times, several months apart. In both cases, I ended up with a BSoD situation that only provided me with an error message stating, "Video Driver Failed to Initialize". I have ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 which is only serviceable through Dell and only one update has ever been available. Since none of the recovery, repair, restore, or safe mode options ever worked, my only option was to restore to the factory image. Fortunately enough, I was able to get access to my files via a command prompt and copy them over to an external drive. Needless to say, since the second incidence of this problem, I am reasonably apprehensive about doing the upgrade at all until I locate a solution or set of solutions to alleviate any repeat performance before they ever occur. Is the "KB937287" what I need to start with???!?

since sp1 (on 2 laptops) ive had issues with network connection going down at random time intervals, only solved by rebooting system completely. since then ive removed sp1 on both machines and is fine.

After installing SP1 I was constantly getting a message "windows explorer not responding". It gave me 3 options, close program, restart program and the other I can't remember. I removed SP and so far have had no problems.

after installing sp1, it will not let me download anything from the internet....gives the message 'your current security settings will not allow this file to be downloaded'. even though i have went in to internet options and changed everything i know, even adding the site as a trusted site...nothing helps. contacted microsoft and they could not solve this either. i hope i dont have to do a system restore to pre sp1 date. i am very upset. any one have a suggestion?

I figured with all the hassles SP2 for XP was, I would leave the thing for a while to let them work the bugs out. Well the bugs aren't worked out. It's hung after the reboot to start installation at part 2.

!! oxc0000022 !! 2414/67454 (taskeng.exe) has not budged in the last hour. I have an HP and if this will not reboot, I guess fixing it will take out the restore section on the hard drive. Which means the OS will be lost. At present it hasn't finished install so there is no access to the OS. So no roll back, no restore, no nothing.

To say the least, I am not a happy camper over this.

After the installation I began having configuration problems also. Eventually I just had to wade through it and refer to the list of problems and solutions (re-checking for solutions). After this was over I found that I was not done yet and had to update my anti-virus and spyware programs. The SP1 also put me to "have to" seek a 4.0.3 upgrade for the music service I had no problems with before SP1. AS i am a wireless user...yes this too had been affected, luckily all I had to do was re-install a few items.

Installed "Important Vista Update" this morning, that was all it said, I said 'yes', it popped up the dialog box saying it was d/l'ing and installing SP1- the download and following 'install' took 30 mins (the d/l took about 11 seconds of that BTW)- then it said "SP1 Install completed successfully" and wanted a reboot- I said ok, and then it went to the 'Stage 1 of 3, % complete, DO NOT TURN OFF THE COMPUTER' screen.....it literally took 45 minutes to install (again??) SP1.....

When that finally finished, I got the logon box-

I immediately noticed some odd things- in control panel, it had reverted back to 'classic view', only the icons were changed to 'extra large' size....

What is even better, when I am using Word, (2007 of course) and I close the doc, it immediately pops up a "Microsoft Office Word has stopped working" warning, followed immediately by a claxon horn "Word cannot open the file" error- I have double and triple checked the docs I am working in to make sure changes are actually being saved, they are- I cannot discern any reason for Office or Windows to be complaining here...

Another annoyance, upon bootup, after the little scrolling warmup bar stops, and the glowing Windows medallion should appear, I now have a 15 to 20 second delay and a black screen, then the OS finally starts up......

Very annoying Bill- very freaking annoying.....

BTW, Vista has been on this laptop for almost 2 years now, its a 4Gig, dual proc H/P laptop- I have never had the first problem with it, or with Vista, until today..... :-(

Ahh...you just have to love Microsoft. Nothing like the royal screw-job called Vista. Vista 'anything' - Home/Pro/Bus/Ult - whatever, how can you design and code an entirely new OS and not make sure the things you're coding ACTUALLY work?

My machine literally ground itself to a white-screen freeze/halt because of, we're thinking, SP1 problems causing Outlook and Word (hmm...two Microsoft products also, right?) to crash. There is a KB article telling you to delete a registry key - boy, that sounds promising as a solution, doesn't it?

I just installed SP1 and it completely crashed my computer to the point where it will not boot up. I'm doing a system restore to try and get it back up and running....So far Windows Vista has been a real pain in the arse. If I had the drivers I'd uninstall Vista and install XP.

Briefly............
New install of Vista Business edition (pre SP1). Ran updates manually and was eventually offered SP1. Downloaded and installed manually. Computer failed to restart afterwards in either normal, safe mode or last known good configuration therefore could not get to the Restore Point function. Had to run a "Repair Install" from the install DVD that identified a "patch" as the culprit and it uninstalled SP1. Computer then started normally.

Was using an HP for a year with no problems. Now tried to install SP1 - Blue screen of death. one root problem - bad driver. Cannot log in as administrator, system recovery says it failed and system restore says I've never made a back up point. Is this a horrible virus or a genuine screw up?

SP1 has caused one serious problem with our Vista Business machines: the "trustedinstaller" has taken over ownership of the ProgramFiles and Windows directories (inc. subdirs of course), AND has completely removed all permissions for administrative users on those same folder (sometimes they have "special access" but full control is gone).
