I tried Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor beta on two relatively new PCs: a 2-month old Fujitsu-Siemens Esprimo 64, and about a year old Fujitsu-Siemens Scenic. I was quite surprised when the Vista Upgrade Advisor informed me that Vista doesn’t come with all the necessary hardware drivers.

On the Scenic PC, it suggested to get drivers from Mircosoft Update for a Intel(R) 82845G graphics controller and a 3Com network card (3C905B-TX). It also suggested to contact the manufacturer for HP Scanjet 6300C. On the new Esprimo computer, it was even worse. The Upgrade Advisor complained about a Realtek AC’97 soundcard. For the mouse, the keyboard, a HP Laserjet 1360, and a Canon scanner, the tool assumed, there are no drivers for Windows Vista. See the screenshots for details.

All these components are very common. That is very strange. Does the Upgrade Advisor really work correctly? As I said before, I wouldn’t buy a new PC before Windows Vista is out for a while. There might be more surprises to come…
