Admin Arsenal is an affordable systems management and monitoring solution for small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs). Its publisher, Brisworks, raffles five free licenses, each worth $399, for 4sysops readers. Admin Arsenal isn’t licensed per client machine as many other system management tools are; you just need a license for every administrator who will use the tool. I tested Admin Arsenal and was surprised at how easy systems management can be. I could start working immediately without even consulting the manual.

Admin-ArsenalAdmin Arsenal offers the most important systems management functions: software and hardware inventory, software deployment, and remote management. Furthermore, it has essential monitoring features such as performance counters and event log monitoring. It doesn’t support OS deployment or patch management; however, considering that Microsoft offers two “free” SMB tools for this purpose, i.e., Windows Deployment Services (WDS) and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), this is not really a shortcoming.

Hyper-VM-mover A tool that allows to move Hyper-V VMs without having to export them. It also works remotely with Hyper-V Server.

This utility can also work remotely, particularly with Hyper-V Server 2008.

Here is a list of facts to know before using this tool :

  • A VM can only be detached if it is in the “Saved” or “Stopped” state.
  • It is not necessary to stop the Hyper-V service and all modifications are detected live by the service.
  • A VM can only be imported if it contains at least on HDD on the IDE 0 controller.
  • All the VM files must be under the same directory, HDD and snapshots.
  • All files that are modified are backed-up next to the original files; All other files are not modified nor moved.
  • .NET 3.5 must be installed.
  • Both command line and GUI tools must run “as administrator”.
  • For remote operations, the current user must be an member of the administrators group of the remote system.

ireboot It is not easy to replace Vista, an operating system which we have learned to love, right? ;-) But Windows 7 is nice too, so we want both of them. I guess many of you are running Windows 7 now in a dual boot configuration. The problem with the Windows Boot Manager is that it lets you select only the operating system before the system boots up.

It is the perfect time to get a cup of coffee while you are rebooting your computer to switch to another OS. As usual, you underestimated Vista’s speed, so when you come back with your well deserved coffee, you already missed the boot menu. You wait until Vista finished booting up to restart your computer again. This gives you the chance to go and get the milk for your coffee. You now know how the story ends. You missed the boot menu again. You decide to wait for the boot menu this time even if you are really tempted to get some sugar for your coffee…

solarwinds-subnet-caculator2 Do you have to calculate IP subnets every now and then? If you are forgetful like me, then you will scratch your head every time you try to remember how subnet masks, subnet addresses, mask bits, host bits etc. are related. Well, scratching my head doesn’t really help, so I go to this site for another IP math lesson. With SolarWinds Advanced Subnet Calculator, you don’t have to do the math yourself. However, a basic understanding of IP addressing is necessary.

Advanced Subnet Calculator comes with the following tools:

IP address details: Gives you the following information : hostname, response time, hex address, binary address, address class info, and information about the owner of the address

EasyBCD While I was configuring Windows 7 to boot from VHD using BCDedit, I was wondering why Microsoft still doesn’t offer a GUI tool to configure the bootloader. BCDedit is certainly a powerful command line tool that goes far beyond Windows XP’s boot.ini capabilities. However, these new features also make it more difficult to configure the bootloader. You don’t have to be an Einstein to add a boot entry with BCDedit. On the other hand, how often do you have to change the boot settings? Every time I need the tool, I have to consult the manual again about its syntax.

EasyBCD supports the most important BCDedit options. Its only disadvantage is that you have to install it first. Thus, any time you want to configure the bootloader on a new machine, you have to download the tool. However, I think that this is still faster than figuring out BCDedit’s syntax.

In my last article, I described the different methods you could use to create a Windows 7 VHD. The next step is to add the VHD to the boot manager of the physical machine. This is quite easy if the computer runs Windows 7. If you want to dual boot Windows Vista, things are a bit more complicated because Vista’s boot manager (bootmgr) doesn’t support VHDs. You can skip the following procedure if your host has Windows 7 installed.

Note: I can’t guarantee that you won’t mess up your Vista installation this way. It’s not really an official procedure and probably not supported by Microsoft. However, it worked for me and you will find several other blogs with similar descriptions. You should make a backup before you proceed.

In my last post, I described some of the ways in which Windows 7’s support for native boots from a VHD can prove to be useful. In this article, I will outline how you can install Windows 7 on a VHD. I am aware of four alternative methods:

Install Windows 7 directly

1. You can install Windows 7 directly to a VHD. I find this procedure quite complicated.

Install Windows 7 in a Hyper-V virtual machine

2. If you have Hyper-V, you can install Windows 7 there, and then copy the VHD to the physical computer from which you want to boot this machine. Don’t forget to sysprep the machine first:
C:\windows\system32\sysprep\sysprep /generalize /shutdown
