Some weeks ago, I blogged about my first impression of Virtual Machine Manager (VMM). I had some time now to have a closer look at Microsoft’s new management tool for Virtual Server. I must admit that VMM made me see Virtual Server with different eyes. A good user interface completely changes the perception of a product.

Some days ago, I blogged about RoyalTS and visionapp Remote Desktop, two free RDP management tools. Some readers linked to four other tools which I didn’t know before. Thanks a lot! All these RDP clients are quite similar, although each of them has its special features that might turn out to be useful in a certain environment. In this post I am comparing six Remote Desktop clients in a feature table: RD Tabs 2.0.8, mRemote 0.0.8.0, RoayalTS 1.3.2, vissionapp Remote Desktop v1.5 (vRD), Terminals 1.6, and Remote Desktop Manager 3.0.0.1 (RD Manager).

One thing I like about blogging is that it is much more communicative than publishing on traditional media. However, even though I had contact with some of you in the comments on my blog or via e-mail, I would like to get in touch with you more interactively. That’s why I set up a chat room where we can shoptalk about Windows administration.

Gates applaudes Jobs?Considering the bad and often unfair press that Vista got during the last months, it must surprise many that Microsoft reports the fastest revenue growth in any first quarter since 1999. 88 million Vista copies have been sold by now. That’s more or less the population of Germany. There was a compatibility and reliability update in August accompanied by a performance update. And then there was another compatibility, reliability and stability update at the beginning of this month. The description of this new one is the same as for the last update.

Switcher is a useful free tool that allows you to switch between open applications more easily than with the Alt-Tab function and Flip 3D (Win+Tab) of Windows Vista. I blogged about Switcher 1.2 some time ago. Now, there is Switcher 2.0 with some cool enhancements.

It is always interesting to see how various kinds of statistics of Web server market shares come to totally different results. This leaves room for everyone to choose which statistics just suits them best or is to their own liking [1] [2]. In this post, I compare four prominent statistics (Netcraft, Google, Port80, Security Space) with respect to the market shares of IIS and Apache.

Blat is a free tool that allows you to send emails from the command line or from a batch file. Of course, you can also use it with any scripting language that allows you to launch external commands. This can be useful, if you want to be informed when a script has failed or when it finished its job.

How often do you connect to a Windows Terminal Server by RDP in a day? If you are a Windows admin, you probably do this more often than anything else. RoyalTS and visionapp Remote Desktop (vRD) are two useful free tools that allow you two manage your remote desktop connections more professionally than with the Remote Desktop Connection utility that comes with Windows.
