Directory AnalyzerDirectory Analyzer is a free tool that displays the occupied disk space in a pie chart. It shows the size of the files in the selected folder and the occupied space of the subfolders. The pie chart helps you to find the folders that need most disk space. The program is a standalone executable, but you need the Java Runtime for it.

Shutdown delay is a simple, free program. You probably figured out already what it does. Sometimes, you want to shut down a computer only after a certain job is finished. The maximum time, you can delay the shut down with this tool, is 300 minutes.

I never understood how Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration for Windows Server 2003 improves security. It is always a risk to surf the Internet on a productive server. I guess there are not many sysops out there who do this. Sometimes, however, you want to download a driver or an update on a server. Usually you do this from reliable sources, and then Internet Explorer just keeps bugging you to add the site to the Trusted sites zone. What sense does this make? If you don’t trust the site you shouldn’t access it at all, especially not from a server. What extra security will it bring if I add it to a list of trusted sites?

Block File Reader is a free Windows tool that allows you to split log files into smaller ones. The programmers say that they tested it with files over 60 GB. The tool also allows you to view files, but has no scroll or search function. So its purpose is only to create smaller files which can be handled easier. One can specify the number of files or the maximums file size of each file. The programmers’ web site was not available when I checked it, but you can download Block File Reader from download.com.

Microsoft has a new Windows Vista blog. They started it on April 21th. So far, there are only two posts written by Microsoft product managers - one is about Windows Defender and the other about Windows Photo Gallery.

VMware already has a couple of prominent bloggers. Now, Diane Greene, the VMware’s president has a blog, too. Her first post is quite lengthy, covering some hot topics of the virtualization market, especially questions regarding open standards and Microsoft’s plan to integrate virtualization technology in its operating systems. I hope, she will find the time to blog regularly. Unfortunately no comments or trackbacks are allowed in her blog.

There is an on going debate [1] [2] ever since Microsoft announced that outbound filtering in Windows Vista’s firewall will be turned off by default. Obviously, Microsoft again valued usability above security. Whereas I understand it in this context, I was a bit surprised how Microsoft staff justified this move.
